HARRISON, BENJAMIN. 1833-1901.

Souvenir of the Inaugural Ball, 1889. 4to (240 x 190 mm). Engraved portraits of Harrison and his Vice President, Levi Morton. Original gold-titled wrappers, bound with silk ribbon ties.
WITH: A campaign card, printed in three colors, 235 x 173 mm, featuring portraits of Harrison and Cleveland, as well as Morton and Allen Thurman. Light wear, mounted in a double glazed frame with a small campaign flag and some other period campaign insignia.
WITH: MCKINLEY, WILLIAM. 1843-1901. Souvenir of the Inaugural Ball, 1897. Oblong 4to (175 x 252 mm). Engraved portrait of McKinley and Vice President Garret Hobart. Original gold-titled wrappers, bound with silk ribbon tie.

Harrison's election was unusual, in that his predecessor and successor was Grover Cleveland. He defeated the incumbent Cleveland in the 1888 election, campaigning on a platform of protectionist tariffs. The tariffs backfired by inflating the price of imported goods, and Cleveland again became a viable candidate. Harrison was defeated after his first term and Cleveland resumed the presidency in 1893. McKinley's inauguration souvenir also highlights an unusual circumstance of his presidency: neither McKinley nor Hobart would survive their terms of office, with Hobart succumbing to a heart ailment in November 1889, and McKinley being assassinated in 1901.
