THE KENNEDY INAUGURAL BALL.

[SHUTZER, PAUL. 1930-1967.] Photograph of JFK and Jackie at the Inaugural Ball, 1961, gelatin silver print, 11 x 14 inches (280 x 358 mm). Light creasing.

Hosted by Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford, Kennedy's inaugural ball is still considered one of the biggest parties ever hosted in Washington, DC. Performers including Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Harry Belafonte entertained guests and the festivities continued until 1:30 am, at which point Kennedy went to another party hosted by his father. Taken for LIFE magazine by photojournalist Paul Shutzer, who had a particular skill for capturing the important and powerful.
