NIXON IN CHINA: PAT'S SOFT DIPLOMACY.

Archive of 21 press photos documenting Pat Nixon during the historic 1972 Nixon visit to China, 8 x 10 inches, most trimmed to 6 x 10 or 8 x 8 inches, February 21 - 28, 1972, with ruled black crayon to rectos, and publication notes, pasted headlines to verso, some with UPI stamps, varying conditions.

THE NIXON'S GO TO CHINA. The crowning foreign policy achievement of Richard Nixon's presidency, the President shocked the world with his 1972 visit to China, the beginning of a normalization of relations with the long ostracized People's Republic of China (PRC). Called by Nixon "the week that changed the world," the visit and the implications of normal US-China relations was an important geopolitical lever in the US-Soviet relationship, and an indication of fissures in a Communist "bloc." An important element was Pat Nixon's "soft" diplomacy in the schools, zoos, and restaurants, showing her engagement and appreciation of the larger Chinese culture.
