JFK SPECIAL AWARD FOR DAVID POWERS ON HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY.

KENNEDY, JOHN F. 1917-1963. An original manuscript, signed by John F. Kennedy ("John F. Kennedy"), "Presented to/ David F. Powers/ on his 50th birthday/ In recognition of your athletic ability in hiking to my icebox to drink my Heinkens," 1 p, 290 x 255 mm, ink on paper, mock seal and red ribbon printed in gilt affixed, "President's Special Award/ Physical Fitness Program/ Walking 50 miles per month from TV to Refrigerator and Back," dated "April 25, 1963," framed. WITH: 2 photographs of President Kennedy presenting the award.
Provenance: gift to David F. Powers; sold Presidential Auction: The Estate of David F. Powers, John McInnis Auctioneers, Boston, February 17, 2013, lot 388.

A HUMOROUS AND INTIMATE GIFT FROM THE PRESIDENT, ENCAPSULATING THE SPIRIT OF AN IMPORTANT FRIENDSHIP. As part of being the President's closest and most trusted friend, David Powers understood well the importance of drinking a beer and having a laugh. With a sharp Irish wit, Powers was known around the White House for his sense of humor, which endeared him to Kennedy. This award is reminiscent of the silver beer mug given to Powers for his previous birthday, that one inscribed "There are three things which are real: God, Human Folly and Laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension, so we must do what we can with the third."
An intimate memento, this special award with its roguish wit captures the essence of one of President Kennedy's most important relationships.
