1868 IMPEACHMENT CONGRESS.

Manuscript Document Signed by 28 members of the 1868 Impeachment Congress (40th Congress), 1 p, a few notations to verso, 205 x 315 mm, Washington, DC, January 16th, 1868, being a subscription form for copies of William Stewart's speech on establishing a National School of Mines, old folds, fading, repair to lower corner.

SIGNED BY 28 MEMBERS OF THE IMPEACHMENT CONGRESS JUST ONE MONTH BEFORE THE TRIAL OF ANDREW JOHNSON FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, and including the signatures of Benjamin "Beast" Butler, Union General and the House Manager during the Impeachment trial; Benjamin F. Wade, President Pro-Tempore of the Senate, and would have succeeded Johnson as President; and Edmund G. Ross, who cast the decisive vote exonerating Johnson, who was one of the 8 "Profiles in Courage" written about by John F. Kennedy, and was commended in a letter from Thomas Ewing: "In making [that] decision, you knew perfectly well that it could consign you to private life and the vehement denunciation of almost all your party friends."
The Impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson was the first Impeachment in American history to come to trial, and though he was found not guilty, reflected the strength of vision of the Founding Fathers in setting up the structures of the democratic government.
