A JEFF DAVIS LETTER RECOLLECTING THE CIVIL WAR.

DAVIS, JEFFERSON. 1808-1889. Autograph Letter Signed ("Jefferson Davis") to Robert N. Scott, compiler of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies addressing an 1864 telegram sent to Genl. Beauregard expressing unease with Hood's Tennessee Campaign, 2 pp, bifolium, lined paper embossed "Paris" on a crown in upper left corner, Beauvoir, Mipi [Mississippi], October 11th, 1884, paste remnants to (blank) rear leaf.

Part of a correspondence with Robert N. Scott recollecting his actions during the Civil War, Jefferson Davis recalls a telegram sent to Beauregard probably late-October, 1864, expressing reservations regarding "a change of plan of campaign," referencing a redirection of resources to the Tennessee campaign of Genl. Hood, in spite of Sherman's continued progress through Georgia. He directs Scott to Hood's own book, Advance and Retreat, and commends Hood, "writing after his disastrous campaign into Tennessee, and the but little interrupted march of Sherman through Ga in the absence of Hood's Army, was too truthful and manly to attempt to avoid responsibility by transferring it to me...."
