THE CAPTURE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS IN WOMEN'S CLOTHING.

Original folk art painting depicting Jefferson Davis in women's clothing being arrested by Union soldiers, "I see that old mother wears whiskers too," oil on canvas, 17 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches, 1860s-1880s, with additional manuscript text below: "If you heart taken woman and children by sundrise we wouldn't Have Rurren dered without a fight;" "It strikes me your old mother wears very Big Boot;" "Please let my old mother go to the spring for some water to wash in," framed.

A WONDERFUL PIECE OF FOLK ART IMAGINING THE CAPTURE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS. When Davis was finally captured on May 10, 1865, he was discovered in his wife's shawl and cloak. While the details and motivation are somewhat murky, the Union press had fun with the idea, and it spawned numerous representations in art and song, including this charming folk art representation of the renowned incident.
