LINCOLN BUILDS A BRIDGE.

An 1864 36-star Abraham Lincoln Portrait Campaign Flag, 7 3/4 x 12 inches, stars and stripes design printed in red, blue and black on linen, with Lincoln portrait surrounded by stars at upper left, stenciled "Lincoln / and / Johnson" across stripes adjacent, with obscured date below portrait (September 30, 1864?), edges slightly frayed, some fading.
Provenance: John L. and Mercy Anna Merrick Custer; by descent (typed note signed by descendant).

VERY RARE 36-STAR 1864 LINCOLN-JOHNSON PORTRAIT CAMPAIGN FLAG. Faced with opposition from General George B. McClelland, Lincoln strategically looked to the South for a Union Party running mate. He found Johnson, who was effective for winning the election, but not as effective after Lincoln was assassinated just a month after his inauguration. Campaign flags from 1864 are much rarer than those of 1860, probably because the war took up the resources that might otherwise have been available. Those designed with 36-stars (Nevada would not join the Union until the following year) are even rarer, and we know of only one other 1864 36-star campaign flag with the Lincoln portrait. See Under Lincoln's Hat 49, pp 104-5.
