LINCOLN ENERGIZES THE YOUTH VOTE.

Brass torch in the form of an eagle with wings lowered, c.1860, with two wicks at the top edges of the wings, soldered to a brass wire frame and cylindrical brass collar for attachment to a pole.

AN ORIGINAL LINCOLN "WIDE-AWAKE" PARADE TORCH. Beginning in early 1860, young men with torches began appearing at Lincoln campaign speeches and accompanying the candidate on his route. Lincoln was energized by the effect and in turn energized these groups to spread across the country, offering young Northerners around the country a political voice. By the time Lincoln was elected President there were reportedly 500,000 members.
