PRESIDENT TYLER CLEANS HOUSE.

TYLER, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed ("J. Tyler") to his Treasury Secretary John C. Spencer maneuvering appointments, 1 p, [Washington, DC, 1843,] old folds, residue from mounting along left edge.

"The letters are right if you can saunter upon such delicate ground - and yet we must have friends in whom to confide." In 1843, realizing that in order to have a chance at reelection the following year he must get Texas annexed, President John Tyler cleaned house of Federal officeholders, and appointing more friendly allies in their stead. It was his newly appointed Secretary of the Treasury who effected these changes, and this note reveals the backroom dealing and intrigure that went along with it.
