HURLEY (FRANK)

"Interior of Winter Quarters", gelatin silver print, mounted on board, 400 x 550mm., [1911-1914]

Footnotes

A busy scene inside Mawson's Huts at Cape Denison, constructed during his Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Mawson selected the location carefully, close to the harbour, slightly sheltered from the fierce wind, and with many seals at hand as a source of emergency food. The main hut had two rooms: living quarters with bunks and a dining table, and the workroom seen in the present photograph. From left to right: Alfred Hodgeman (at the workbench), John Hunter, Charles Laseron, Percy Correll (at a lathe), and Walter Hannam (oiling the engine of the generator).

Provenance: Sir Douglas Mawson, and by descent; private collection.
