PONTING (HERBERT GEORGE)

"Midnight in the Antarctic [Summer]", blue-toned carbon print, captioned and signed ("H.G.Ponting") beneath image, 325 x 460mm., [1910, printed later]

Footnotes

"This beautiful study was secured in the summer, after the break-up of the ice in McMurdo Sound. It was made at mid-night, by the light of the Midnight Sun, which in these regions is then nearly as high at 12 p.m. as at noon. A part of the ice-foot is seen, and in the distance, some stranded icebergs" (No. 96 Fine Art Society Exhibition catalogue).
