A Whieldon type candlestick, circa 1750-60

Curiously modelled as a gnarled tree stump growing from an irregular hollow base moulded with flowers, ferns and grasses, large florets applied to the stump and base, the candle nozzle formed from overlapping leaves, decorated with green, brown and blue splashes, 29cm high

Footnotes

A saltglaze example with birds perched on a very similar stump is illustrated by Jonathan Horne in his catalogue of March 1988, no.211 and a similar Whieldon type stump modelled with a reclining cow is shown in his catalogue of March 1994, no.399. See also the Whieldon type model of a horse before a stump from the Henry H Weldon Collection, illustrated by Leslie B Grigsby, English Pottery (1990), p.359. Both the cow and horse models have parallels in Longton Hall porcelain. It is likely that the present example is incomplete.
