Footnotes

Provenance
Phillips sale in late 1980s
The Harold Schenberg Collection, Western Australia

Illustrated by John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p.329, colour plate 85. The 'T' stamp on the footrim is the mark of John Toulouse who is likely to have been both the modeller and the 'repairer' who supervised the assembly of these remarkable vases. Closely related 'Frill vases' were made at Bow and at Bristol and in both cases examples are recorded with T or To marks. Toulouse worked at Worcester around 1770-72 and the enamelling on this pair shows that they were made and decorated at the Worcester factory. A very similar Worcester vase and cover from the Liane Richards Collection was sold in these rooms on 13 April 2016, lot 156. Another pair from the Zorensky Collection was sold at Bonhams on 23 February 2005, lot 207 and again on 3 November 2016, lot 236. The Zorensky pair was in poor condition and by comparison the present pair has survived with remarkably little damage.
