A very unusual Scottish pottery relief-moulded map, circa 1820

Of rectangular form, moulded in relief and hand modelled to form a three dimensional map of Scotland and the north-eastern coast of Ireland, different regions picked out in typical so-called 'Portobello' colours and outlined in black, hundreds of place names individually stamped in tiny lettering over the surface, the scrolled frame picked out in blue and impressed with the title 'SCOTLAND', 42cm x 34.5cm

Footnotes

The purpose of this most unusual map is not certain. It has been constructed from five sections, carefully cut together and laid within a deep frame. When filled with water, the map makes more geographical sense. The water fills the gap between Scotland and Ireland thus restoring a physical division as the two relevant pieces are laid side-by-side.
