A Wood Family figure of a sweep or clown, circa 1790-1800

Standing with his hands tucked into his shirt for warmth, wearing a brown jacket and yellow trousers, the rectangular base washed in green, 18.2cm high

Footnotes

Another example is illustrated by Herbert Read, Staffordshire Pottery Figures (1928), pl.33 and two more from the Henry H Weldon Collection by Leslie B Grigsby, English Pottery (1990), p.412. Read attributes the modelling to Voyez but the source is likely to be an original by Paul Louis Cyfflé at Lunéville. Models of clowns are listed in the 1783 and 1786 sales ledgers of John Wood.
