A Wood family group of Hudibras, circa 1785

With underglaze coloured-oxide decoration, finely modelled riding a brown horse and drawing his sword with his right hand, wearing a brown jacket, green breeches, black boots and a black hat, standing on a rocky base upon a rectangular waisted plinth, 29cm high

Footnotes

Hudibras appears in a narrative poem by Samuel Butler written in a mock-heroic style. The satirical work was created during the civil war and first published in 1663. A new edition was published in 1728 with illustrations by William Hogarth. John Wood's account book for 11 February 1786 lists '1 Hudubras on horse 2.0d'. A further example from the Henry Weldon Collection is illustrated by Leslie B. Grigsby (1990) p.466, no.299a.
