Hudibras appears in a narrative poem by Samuel Butler written in a mock-heroic style. The satirical work was created during the civil war and first published in 1663. A new edition was published in 1728 with illustrations by William Hogarth. John Wood's account book for 11 February 1786 lists '1 Hudubras on horse 2.0d'. A further example from the Henry Weldon Collection is illustrated by Leslie B. Grigsby (1990) p.466, no.299a. Another from the Copeland Collection at Trelissick House was sold by Bonhams on 23 July 2013, lot 102. See also Pat Halfpenny, English Earthenware Figures, p.62
