A rare Meissen two-handled oval sugar or butter box and cover, circa 1735

The box painted on either side with a trailing branch of indianische Blumen and a bird in flight, the cover with an insect above a bird perched on a flowering branch, surmounted by a black-spotted crouching rabbit finial, single flowers around the rim, the scroll handles edged in gilding, 16.2cm across handles, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, impressed Dreher's mark of four overlapping circles (2)

Footnotes

The unusual Dreher's mark of four intersecting circles is not recorded by Rainer Rückert (Alchemistische Symbolzeichen als Meissener Masse-, Former-, Bossirer- und Drehermarken im vierten Jahrzehnt des 18. Jahrhunderts, in Keramos 151 (1996), pp. 57ff). The shape is referred to by Kaendler as both a sugar and butter box (J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II (2013), p. 86).
