With Enrico Caviglia, Lugano

One of the first specialist collectors of early Meissen porcelain, Dr. Carl Spitzner (1831-99) had a preference for rare figures and portrait medallions and for table wares with unusual marks and signatures. He collected between around 1860 and 1890, when the Dresden porcelain collection acquired his collection of around 1,400 pieces. See W. von Seidlitz, Die Spitznerische Sammlung Altmeißener Porzellane, in Kunstchronik, N.F. 2 (1891) pp. 356-361, 375-80 and 408-409; and I. Menzhausen, Gedenkblatt für einen großen Meißen-Sammler: Dr. Carl Spitzner in Dresden, in Keramos 126 (1989), pp. 3-6; and Klaus Peter Arnold, Figürliches Porzellan aus der Sammlung Spitzner (1988).
