A rare Volkstedt snuff box, circa 1765

Moulded on all sides with a broad rococo scroll-work cartouche painted with scenes depicting pastoral figures in a bucolic lanscape, the base with a small boy catching a fish, the moulded cartouches picked out in gilding, the inside of the lid painted with a large Classical scene depicting Pyramus and Thisbe, set in a gold mount, 9cm. across

A similar if somewhat smaller Volkstedt box is illustrated by B. Beaucamp-Markowsky, Boîtes en Porcelaine des manufactures européennes au 18e siècle (1985) cat.no. 349. The scene on the inside of the cover, kindly identified by R. Hird, is based on a print by Edmé Jeaurat after Nicolas Vleughels, Paris, 1722, a copy of the print is kept in the British Museum, object number 1873,0809.192.
