Footnotes

See A. d'Agliano in M. Ansaldi/A. Craievich, Geminiano Cozzi e le sue Porcellane (2016), pp. 371ff. for a discussion of the Cozzi groups and figures of dwarves. Several single dwarves are illustrated under cat. nos. 1-19 - a series to which this figure also likely belonged. A similar figure was sold by Christie's Milan, 5 December 2005, lot 643 (part).

The series of Nani or dwarves made by the Cozzi factory were in part modelled after the Callotto Resucitato, re-edited by Stamperia Remondini, and based on the Eingerichtes Zwergen Cabinet by Martin Engelbrecht (1710-15). d'Aglian (op.cit., p.373) notes that the Nani modelled by Geminiano Cozzi were less misformed and grotesque, and more illustrative in their clothing and pursuits of daily life.
