Footnotes

The very fine modelling of this figure shows the hand of a skilled modeller but lacks the neo-classical touch associated with Filippo Tagliolini. It may have been modelled by his predecessor, Francesco Celebrano. Considering the subject and rarity of the model, it is likely to have been made by special commission for a member of the Royal Court of Ferdinand IV to form part of a House Altar.

Another example of this rare crucifix marked with a crowned N in underglaze-blue and set in a tortoise frame was offered by Christie's Rome, 19 November 1991, lot 221.
