An early 18th century Dieppe ivory tobacco rasp
Carved with a figure of Zeus sitting astride an eagle, within a scrolling border, with grotesque mask and shell work and acanthus leaf decoration, with hinged compartment to the rear and lacking rasp, 6cm wide, 3cm deep, 19cm high (2in wide, 1in deep, 7in high)

This early 18th century rasp has a similar grotesque mask to the base with a carved shell below. Les Ivoires, Tardy, Paris 1966, illustrates another comparable rasp on page 148, from the Musee de Dieppe and decorated with a central allegorical scenes within a scallop edged field, with shell motifs above and below.
