Footnotes

Bruijninx was born in Rotterdam where he lived and worked throughout his life. He painted fans as well as portrait miniatures. He was one of the most inventive of Dutch miniaturists, noted for his rejection of the pointillé technique favoured by many European miniaturists at the time. He instead developed a fluid style with broad brushstrokes, leaving the grey preparatory drawing beneath the paint surface clearly visible. Bruijninx is also known to have worked in The Hague, Harlem and Kennemerland. In 1760 he joined the Painters' Guild in The Hague. His work is represented in The Wallace Collection in London and The Tansey Collection at The Bomann Museum in Celle, Germany.
