Footnotes
The original self portrait by the French miniaturist, Louis François Aubry (1767-1851) is held by the Louvre in Paris. Aubry's stance and fashionable hairstyle show him as a self-confident young man who takes pride in his appearance. His posture is possibly inspired by the self-portrait of his teacher, Jean-Baptiste Isabey (French, 1767-1855), which is held by The Wallace Collection in London. Aubry led two studios in Paris (one for ladies and one for gentlemen), where his self-portrait could be copied by his students. A number of near-contemporary and much later copies exist as a result.
