£400 - £600

Two French prints depicting Ottoman scenes

After Antoine-Ignace Melling (French, 1763-1831)
From his 'Voyage Pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore Paris', circa 1809-1819. (2).

Footnotes

Melling travelled throughout the Levant and stayed for several years in Constantinople. While there he met the sister of the Sultan, Sultane Hadidge, who in 1795 appointed him as architect in charge of renovating her palace at Ortakoy. As a result Melling was able to prepare the original drawings for this series of prints, which achieved great popularity in France. For the complete set of 52 engravings, see Sotheby's, The Turkish Sale, 11th October 1996, lot 242.
