A Canton famille rose dish from the service of Nasir al-Dawlah Farmanfarma

Of saucer form, painted with fashionable figures in traditional Chinese dress on a terrace and centred by a medallion inscribed with Persian script, within a border painted with flowers and butterflies, (old repair to rim).

Footnotes

The central medallion is inscribed: "farmayesh-e navvab-e arfa'-e vala naser al-dawlah farmanfarma zayyid iqbalahu 1308", ('Commissioned by His Highness, the exalted, the eminent Nasir al-Dawlah Farmanfarma, may his prosperity increase 1308 (1890-91)'.

The patron is 'Abd al-Hamid Mirza (1256-1309/1840-1891) the eldest son of Firuz Mirza Farmanfarma. He held various posts and titles during his life, including the title Farmanfarma and governorship of Kirman and Baluchistan, which he received after his father's death in 1303 (1885-6). He died in 1309 (1891-2).
