A fine and early John Ulrich signed and engraved deluxe .44 (R.F.) 'Model 1866' lever-action rifle by Winchester, no. 38507B (circa 1870)

The 'Third Model' brass receiver, engraved with bold foliate-scrollwork on a stippled background, the left side-plate with intricate inscription shield and Ulrich's signature wolf's-head figure and eagle's-head on the right, with strong traces of original gilding in the cuts, the hammer, trigger and lever with traces of hardening-colour, the top-tang with graduated peep-sight, the left side of upper tang engraved with "J.U." in large script letters, the left side of lower tang stamped with "G" and "XXX", the last four digits of the serial number "8507" are found in the top tang channel of buttstock and inside of butt-plate, the highly-figured stock with brass butt-plate and trap engraved en suite (with four-piece cleaning rod), sling-swivels (forward missing), the forend with brass cap engraved en suite, the barrel engraved Winchester's-Repeating Arms.
