An engraved .44 (W.C.F.) deluxe 'Model 1873' lever-action rifle by Winchester, no. 35211 (dated 1879)

Engraved in One of One Thousand style, the 'Second Model' receiver with dust-cover and rail, the right side-plate engraved depicting a leaping stag in natural surroundings, the left side-plate with presentation-panel with faint outline of engraved name, with Ulrich-style bold foliate-scrollwork, much hardening colour (some renewed), top tang with folding graduated peep-sight, the well-figured chequered stock (minor crack to rear of top tang), crescent steel butt-plate with trap (with four-piece cleaning rod), the octagonal barrel engraved Winchester's-Repeating-Arms. New Haven. CT. King's-Improvement-Patented-March 29.1866.October 16.1860. with scroll-engraved breech and muzzle ends and white metal barrel bands, with full-length magazine-tube, interchangeable Globe foresight, sporting semi-buckhorn rear-sight with adjustable centre insert
24¼in. barrel, recent Birmingham nitro proof (discreet marks)

James D. Julia Inc., Fairfield, Maine, 4th-7th October, 2004, Lot 450: When Mr. Owens purchased this rifle the name was still present, but when he went to pick it up, the family had sanded away the name, reportedly to prevent the family name from being disclosed. He had the sideplate re-case colored to match the rest of the original receiver colors.
