The "Second Model" receiver with dust-cover and rail, the left side-plate engraved depicting a stag and hind in natural surroundings, with bold foliate-scroll engraving, full nickel finish, the hammer and lever with some hardening-colour, set trigger, the tang signed J. ULRICH, the figured-stock (possibly replaced) and engraved nickel-plated crescent butt-plate with trap, sling-swivels, the fore-stock with nickel-plated cap engraved en suite, the octagonal barrel engraved Winchester's Repeating Arms.New Haven.Conn.U.S.A. -King's Improvement Patented March 29.1866. Literature
James D. Gordon, Winchester New Model of 1873, Volume I, 1997. Gordon states that the seven-leaf sight is "the rarest and most interesting rear sight found on Model 1873's." At the time of his writing, Gordon was able to positively identify the serial numbers of 10 rifles known to have been fitted with it.
