A .44-40 'Model 1873' lever-action rifle by Winchester, no. 23163 (dated 1878)

The 'First Model' receiver with dust-cover, best bold foliate-scrollwork, blued finish, the hammer and lever with some hardening-colour (possibly renewed), the top tang with a mid-range Vernier peep-sight, the left side of lower tang stamped with assembly number "1294", matching assembly number is found in the top tang channel of buttstock (4 indistinct) and inside toe of butt-plate, the stock with steel butt-plate and trap, the forestock with blued cap, sling-swivels (forward missing), the round barrel engraved Winchester's-Repeating Arms. New Haven. CT. King's-Improvement-Patented-March 29.1866.October 16.1860. with full-length magazine-tube, nickel fixed blade foresight and sporting rear-sight with adjustable centre insert and chequered hand grips
