A customised .38-56 (W.C.F.) 'Model 1886' lever-action rifle by Winchester, no. 15788 (dated 1888)

The receiver retaining full renewed hardening-colour, later engraved with bold foliate-scrollwork on a stippled background with gold inlaid scrolling borders, the hammer and lever engraved ensuite, the right side engraved with separate vignettes of a mountain lion, picked out in gold, and a mountain goat in silver and gold, the left side with a chased bugling bull and cow elk picked out in gold in natural surroundings with silver moon,the underside of the receiver with a gold chased bison head, signed L F Sherman on the right side, the top tang drilled and tapped for a sight and stamped Model 1886, and the bottom tang stamped Pat. Oct. 14. 1884. Jan. 20. 1885., the chequered highly-figured replacement stock carved depicting oak leaves and acorns, with butt-plate retaining virtually-full hardening colour engraved en suite, the well-figured chequered replacement forend carved depicting oak leaves and acorns, with cap retaining virtually-full renewed hardening colour and engraved en suite with gold inlaid border-scrolls, the re-blued octagonal barrel engraved Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven. Conn. U.S.A., with gold inlaid barrel bands and engraved en suite at muzzle and breech ends, with full-length magazine-tube with gold inlaid retaining band engraved en suite, Lyman hunting foresight with brass bead, sporting rear-sight with adjustable centre insert engraved en suite
