A customised .44 (W.C.F.) 'Model 53' lever-action take-down rifle by Winchester, no. 1493 (dated 1924)
The receiver retaining full re-blued finish, later engraved with bold foliate-scrollwork on a stippled background with gold inlaid scroll borders, the hammer, lever and receiver ring engraved en suite, the right side with a silver-encrusted polar bear, the left side with a pair of gold-encrusted moose, signed L. Sherman underneath, and the head-on gold-encrusted portrait of a buffalo in front of the lever, the top tang with Lyman peep-sight, the chequered highly-figured replacement stock carved depicting with foliage and ornate borderwork with chequered steel butt-plate, sling eye, the figured replacement forend carved en suite with forend cap engraved en suite, the round barrel stamped Model 53 Winchester Trade Mark Nickel Steel 44 W.C.F. on the left side and Made In U.S.A. Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven. Conn. on the right side, with silver and gold inlaid barrel bands and engraved en suite at muzzle and breech ends with half-length magazine-tube stamped Pat. June 6. 1893 and Lyman bead foresight and Lyman No. 6 folding two-leaf rear-sight
