A Fine Silesian 55-Bore Flintlock Axe-Pistol (Fokos)
Late 17th Century

With plain barrel of part octagonal section at the breech, axe-head with down bent triangular blade, waisted block-shaped peen and retained by a flat ovoidal plate also forming the ramrod-entry and secured by two screws, plain tang, flat bevelled lock, straight figured haft (minor old splits along the bottom) profusely inlaid in the Teschen manner with white horn or bone pellets and scrolls inhabited by hounds pursuing hares, stags, a bird perched on a branch, grotesque profile heads (one a replacement) and monsters, iron-mounted reversible grip inlaid en suite and involving a profile bust of a Turk on one side between grotesque heads, and with an elephant also between grotesque heads on the other, opening to reveal a long slender tapering blade of square section, notched tapering spike at the back, ovoidal safety-catch engaging with the screw-shaped trigger, and original wooden ramrod with iron button-headed tip
