A Decorative Pair Of Composite 20-Bore Wheel-Lock Pistols In German Late 16th Century Style
19th Century, The Locks Mid-17th Century

With barrels each chiselled along most their length with serpents, a figure holding a pair of standards, a bird perched on his head, and with a human mask between a pair of lions and serpents, tangs each chiselled with two human masks, rounded locks of Dutch type each with slightly domed external wheel with a retaining hook at the base and manually operated sliding pan-cover, one cock-bridle secured from within, ebonised full stocks (some old splits) inlaid in engraved white horn or bone with hounds pursuing foxes and hares in landscapes, a huntsman on horseback opposite the lock, a male figure in contemporary costume on the back of each butt, and with foliage and ball-flowers on the shaped scrolled pommels, all the inlays within roped white horn or bone line borders (minor losses), plain trigger-guards, baluster triggers, foliate engraved ramrod-pipes (one replaced) and fore-end caps (one repaired), and later bone-tipped ramrods (2)
