A Sardinian 40-Bore Miquelet-Lock Gun
18th Century

With tapering octagonal barrel chiselled with foliate decoration beneath the forward section to the muzzle and in three long panels over a third of its length at the breech, all against punched grounds, single iron barrel band chased with foliage, plain tang, characteristic lock, wooden three-quarter stock with three iron plates along the fore-end (some damage) embossed and chased with symmetrical designs of foliage, pinned iron side-plate chased with foliage inhabited by serpents, a pierced plate in front of the trigger-guard en suite, butt of triangular form entirely set with pinned iron panels pierced and chased with repeated designs of interlace and foliage, and with a tapering tubular comb decorated with pairs of incised lines, plain butt-plate, spur trigger-guard with brass inlay, and no provision for a ramrod
