A Continental Sporting Crossbow
Early 17th Century And Later

With steel bow secured by its original cords (damaged), string of twisted cords (worn and repaired), wooden tiller (some old worming) inlaid along both sides with engraved white horn or bone sea monsters either side of a central cartouche engraved with a spread eagle, the cheek-piece engraved with a crossbowman in contemporary costume, the top and bottom surfaces veneered in white horn or bone decoratively engraved with foliage and borders involving grotesque and devil's masks, the upper borders along each side veneered in boxwood (some losses), bone nut (bolt-clip incomplete), curved steel trigger-lever, circular adjustable folding back-sight, and steel lugs for a cranequin (some damage and repairs)
