An English 'Mortuary' Hilted Backsword
Mid-17th Century

With tapering blade cut with two fullers along the back over nearly its entire length to the double-edged point, iron hilt comprising solid guard chiselled with a male portrait bust on each side framed by foliage against a punched ground, short scrolled wrist-guard, knuckle-guard flanked by two diagonal bars to bifurcated side-bars chiselled with foliage, the top of the knuckle-guard and side-bars screwed to the chiselled globular pommel, the latter with large button, grip bound with later twisted copper and iron wire, and retaining an original Turk's head
