An English Rapier
Dated 1689

With tapering double-edged blade incised with the date between four 'x' marks within the shallow fuller on each side of the forte, a running wolf mark beyond, iron hilt comprising symmetrical shell-guard chiselled with a double leaf-calyx on each side and enclosing a convex plate chased on the outside with foliage enclosing a grotesque mask between ovals pierced with small holes, downbent bud-shaped rear quillon, chiselled knuckle-guard riveted to the pommel and linked by two scrolled side-bars on each side to the shell-guard, and fluted drum-shaped pommel with flattened button (grip missing, some rust patination)
