An English Brass-Hilted Officer's Sword
Late 17th Century

With broad tapering double-edged blade incised within repeated 'l' and 'H' marks with the fuller on both sides of the forte, a bifurcated mark beyond, cast and chased hilt comprising double shell-guard with foliage centred on grotesque masks on the central inner and outer edges and with a double leaf-calyx on the moulded outer border, both sides with a crowned 'Green Man' mask between a lion and unicorn flanked by standing figures, knuckle-guard with double leaf-calyx at the centre and hooked into the globular pommel, the latter with crowned standing figure between horsemen on each side against punched guards, flattened button, lobed rear quillon, scrolled side-bars linking the knuckle-guard to the shell-guard, and grip bound with twisted brass wire (secured by later cord at the top) between Turk's heads
