A Rare Indian Mail And Plate Shirt
19th Century, Probably Kutch

Of riveted and solid rings of varying degrees of thickness, comprising a short-sleeved thigh-length shirt opening up the front and with two rows of three rectangular plates at the front overlaid in parcel-gilt silver chased with repeated designs of flower-heads against finely punched grounds, the central plates secured in the closed position by long pins, flanked by similar plates under the armpits and down the sides, the back with five plates en suite and with three rows of overlapping rectangular plates across the shoulders, each with cusped lower edge and overlaid in silver chased with repeated designs of gilt florets (small areas of rust)
