Three Indian Katars
18th/19th Century

The first with tapering double-edged blade with reinforced point of diamond section, the forte on both sides deeply chiselled with a gold-damascened cyprus tree, russet iron hilt gold-damascened overall with scrolling flowering foliage and comprising slender side-bars, and two grips each swelling at the centre; the second with tapering double-edged blade cut with converging flutes forming a medial ridge on each side to the point of reinforced diamond section, copper hilt (worn) punched and chased with flowering foliage overall retaining traces of original gilding, and comprising fluted side-bars, and baluster grips, in original leather-covered wooden scabbard with tooled foliate borders and silver chape with foliate border; the last of characteristic 'scissor' form, the blade opening to reveal a central blade with point of flattened diamond section, grips, the lower one operating the blades against a spring, and retaining some of its lightly silver-damascened decoration, in its leather-covered scabbard (3)
