A Large German Sporting Crossbow And Cranequin
Late 16th Century

With robust steel bow struck with a maker's mark on the inside (see Neue Støckel, p. 1473), retaining much of its green painted decoration against a black ground (paint chipped), and secured by its original cords also securing an iron ring for suspension, original string of twisted cord, figured wooden tiller with hollowed cheek-piece and mounted along the top and bottom with bone panels within line borders, the panels incised with designs of foliage including a grotesque monster behind the fore-sight (missing), and on the bottom with a bearded grotesque mask, his mouth forming the aperture for a set-trigger rod, later russet steel mechanism plate with folding brass back-sight and brass nut, curved steel lever trigger, later trigger, swivelling safety-catch and steel cranequin lugs (some old repairs and surface rust, the mechanism updated during the bow's working life); the steel cranequin with circular gear-box with bevelled edge and central bar, clawed ratchet bar (belt-hook missing), and slender curved winding arms of part diamond section with old replacement swelling wooden handle (cord loop replaced by a steel hook, some rust patination overall) (2)
