A Medieval Sword Of Viking Type, Petersen Type X
10th/11th Century

In excavated condition, with broad slightly tapering blade (some lamination along the edge on one side) with shallow central fuller over nearly its entire length on both sides to the point, the fuller on one side at the forte inlaid with a copper-alloy cross, hilt comprising flat ovoidal quillons inlaid with a copper-alloy 'X' on each side of the terminals, flat tapering tang, and flattened pommel of 'tea-cosy' form inlaid with a copper-alloy line border around the bottom edge
74.1 cm. blade, 87.5 cm. overall
