A Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadsword In The Manner Of John Simpson The Younger Of Glasgow
Early 18th Century

With broad tapering double-edged blade with short fuller on each side of the forte incised 'IXIX' and with a running fox mark beyond, iron hilt of rounded bars involving fretted rectangular and ovoidal panels pierced with circles and trefoils within fluted and line borders, the side panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal, fore-guards, scrolled wrist-guard originally with a side-bar joined to the back of the basket on each side, fluted conical pommel, and spirally-grooved fish-skin covered grip bound with twisted brass wire between brass Turk's head (some rust patination)
