An English 'Mortuary' Hilted Backsword
Mid-17th Century

With tapering blade fullered along the back on each side over most of its length, iron hilt comprising solid guard chiselled with a male bust on each side between two panels of symmetrical foliage, chiselled knuckle-guard connected to bifurcated bars on each side and screwed to the pommel, globular pommel chiselled with foliage, and later spirally-grooved wooden grip (some pitting overall); together with a halberd, 17th century, the steel head (some pitting) with broad blade with medial ridge, axe-blade with convex cutting edge and rounded beak-shaped fluke between pairs of hooked lugs, and tapering socket, on later wooden staff of circular section (2)
