A Rare Continental Transitional Rapier
Mid-Late 17th Century

With tapering blade (some pitting overall) of flattened diamond section with fuller over each side of the forte incised respectively 'CLEMENS' and 'THORNN' and with a cross mark beyond, iron hilt comprising double shell-guard pierced and chiselled in relief on the outside with portrait medallions between cherubs, all against grounds of foliage, quillon-block chiselled with a monster-head between foliage on both sides, down bent quillons with ovoidal terminals each chiselled with a profile portrait bust on one side and partly chequered foliage on the other, knuckle-guard en suite and originally secured to the pommel (screw missing), globular pommel chiselled with foliage centred on the button, and wooden grip (split, binding missing)
