Five Various Small-Swords
Late 17th/18th Century

The first with tapering double-edged blade of slightly hollowed flattened diamond section (light pitting overall), brass hilt cast, pierced and chased with symmetrical foliage centred on cherub's heads between dolphins (rear quillon missing), and wooden grip retaining its brass Turk's heads (binding missing); the second with tapering blade of hollow triangular section, steel hilt including shell-guard pierced with numerous close-set holes (knuckle-guard incomplete, spirally-grooved wooden grip damaged and repaired, pitting overall); the third with earlier slender tapering blade of diamond section incised with letters within the short fuller on each side of the forte, brass-hilt cast with foliage (knuckle-guard removed) with lobed slightly recurved quillon tips, fluted pommel, and wooden grip (split, binding missing); the fourth with blade of hollow triangular section etched with foliage and rocailles on each side of the forte, and faceted gilt-copper hilt (worn) including shell-guard pierced with a border of quatrefoils; the last of similar form (blade pitted), with brass hilt retaining traces of gilding, and grip bound with twisted copper wire and crimped ribbon (5)
