A Very Rare Ottoman Or Polish Horseman's Hammer (Nadziak)
17th Century

The steel head with stepped square hammer-head with raised diamond-shaped panel on the face, moulded neck of square section, faceted socket with side-strap on each side (both repaired) with rounded terminals, and downcurved fluke of tapering octagonal section, retaining traces of gold-damascened Arabic calligraphy overall within borders of silver-damascening and overlay, on replacement steel-mounted wooden haft of circular section
23.5 cm. head

The inscriptions that can be translated include 'Oh Ali' in thuluth and 'There is no God but Allah and He...' in Arabic
