A Rare Mameluke-Hilted Officer's Sabre Presented By General Lord Paget To His Aide-De-Camp Captain Diggens
Dated 1802

With curved blade double-edged in front of the yelman and with bright borders, the forte one side with an elongated panel enclosing the brightly etched inscription 'From Major General Lord Paget To His Aide-De-Camp, Cap.tn, Diggens, 11th., Lt., Dragoons, Feb.y, 1802., ormolu hilt comprising border engraved quillon-block with bud-shaped terminals, reeded grip-strap, ivory grip-scales (old splits and minor chip), and pommel with brass-lined piercing for a sword-knot, in original wooden scabbard covered in black leather with border engraved ormolu locket, chape and suspension mounts in the Eastern fashion, the last each with suspension ring, and retaining much original gilding

Footnotes

Lord Henry Paget had a famous military career serving as a distinguished cavalry commander. He served in Flanders and Spain and inherited the title of Earl of Uxbridge in 1812. At Waterloo he led the infamous charge of the British heavy cavalry and later lost his right leg to one of the last cannon shots of the day. He was created Marquess of Anglesey on 4 July 1815 and promoted to General in 1819. He died in 1854

Richard Diggens joined the 11th Light Dragoons as Cornet in 1796, and was successively promoted Lieutenant in 1799, Captain in 1801, Major in 1806, Lt. Colonel by brevet in June 1813 and Lt. Colonel of the 11th Dragoons in 1818. He served in Spain and Portugal and was attached to the Portuguese service receiving a gold medal for the Battle of Vittoria where he commanded the 6th Portuguese Dragoons. He retired in 1820, and died at Le Havre on 4 December 1835
